What Is an Architecture Framework?
An Architecture Framework is a structured set of principles, practices, methods, models and guidance that helps an organisation develop, describe, govern and maintain its Enterprise Architecture.
It provides a common approach for answering questions such as:
- What should we architect? — business, data, applications, technology and other domains.
- How should architecture be developed? — processes, methods and lifecycle activities.
- What should be documented? — viewpoints, models, principles and standards.
- How should decisions be governed? — roles, responsibilities, controls and review processes.
- How do we move from current to future state? — roadmaps, transition architectures and implementation planning.
Examples include TOGAF, Zachman, FEAF and DoDAF. These frameworks have different purposes; some emphasise architecture development methods, while others focus more on classification, viewpoints or specific organisational contexts.
In simple terms, an Architecture Framework provides the structure and guidance for doing architecture consistently. It is not the architecture itself—it is the framework used to create, communicate and govern the architecture.
