What is a capability map?

A capability map describes the abilities an organisation needs in order to achieve its objectives.

For example, a retailer may require capabilities such as:

  • Product management
  • Customer management
  • Order management
  • Payment processing
  • Supply chain management
  • Marketing
  • Analytics

A capability is deliberately different from a specific organisational department or IT system.

This makes capability maps useful for strategy and investment planning.

If a capability is strategically important but poorly supported, it may be a candidate for investment.

If several systems support the same capability, there may be an opportunity for simplification.
